ERUPTION

4. / 5. JULY 2018

Golden Pudel Club

A two-day happening freely based on Conrad Schnitzler.

Schnitzler? Schnitzler!

The self-proclaimed „Intermedialist“ and pioneer of electronic avant-garde music worked on a marathon performance practice in the early years of his artistic career: in his short-lived but legendary Zodiac Free Arts Lab in Berlin in the late Sixties, he led his audience into a whirlwind of sensory experiences: Concerts, installations, videos, and performances interacted with each other and turned into events that still conjure a sparkle in the eyes of their visitors today.

Conrad Schnitzler (1937-2011) called himself an “Intermedialist”, for he often expressed himself as a musician, as a composer, and as a video and concept artist at the same time, maybe also as a poet, never as an universal genius, but he surely was a great philosopher. He is regarded as one of the most important pionieers of electronic avant-garde music.

Transcending genres, he has influenced the work of numerous musicians and artists all over the world: As a founding member of the influential Kraut bands Tangerine Dream and Kluster, as a co-founder of the legendary Zodiac Free Arts Lab in Berlin, and with his solo works as well as with his innumerable collaborations.

For ERUPTION the Golden Pudel Club will be transformed into a multiphonic space, based on Ken Montgomery’s New York Sound-Art Gallery Generator. A space that will be changed into new states continuously, for two days and two nights. Besides concerts, a pop-up tape store, video projections, Beschnitzlerungen etc., the multi-channel Schnitzler tapes, presented by Montgomery, form the heart of Eruption. These sound-trips are being remixed several times during the festival and can be consumed by the public while walking, sitting, or lying down – in the dark, or in the light.

SVARTE GREINER:

Svarte Greiner is the shadow casted solo guise of Berlin based

Norwegian Erik K Skodvin (B/B/S, Deaf Center). Inhabiting his own genre of Acoustic Doom since the early Type records days, his music and live performance can be seen as something of a time stopping cinematic experience, embodied by surreal peaks of guitar improvisations and low rumbling drones. Working otherwise with soundscapes both for visuals, film and as inspirations for his own record label Miasmah, he attempts to purvey something of a timeless and honest sound merging melancholy with horror.

AARON MOORE :

Primarily a drummer he generally considers any instrument or object playable in one way or another. Moore is a founding member of the English experimental group Volcano The Bear. Formed in 1995 VTB have been critically acclaimed as one the leading lights of the British experimental music scene. In a 2006 feature on the group the Wire magazine described them as “producing some of the finest, wildest British music of the last 10 years on record & on stage”.

As a solo performer Moore thrives on the unpredictable. Since moving to Brooklyn in 2006, he has been developing his solo work in a number of ways using 4-track tape machines, percussion, trumpet and voice to create methodical sonic environments, with the constant potential for chaos and collapse leading him to new territories. A habit for audience participation/gentle manipulation is also crucial to his live work. Moore is a firm believer in spontaneity. Being as loosely prepared as possible is his mother of invention.

Moore has appeared on over 40 albums with various groups & toured extensively in Europe and North America. He has a number of other ongoing projects including a duo with Argentinian improvisor Alan Courtis, Brooklyn based ’notjazz‘ group Gospel Of Mars and has collaborated/performed with Thierry Muller, Boredoms, A Hawk & A Hacksaw, and the LAFMS group AIRWAY amongst many others.

If the world would be a different one and tennis a cosmoproletarian form of sport, this would be the music playing in the clubhouse, after the match.

Zink Tonsur, one half of the Frankfurt based performance-duo Les Trucs and his gadgetry perform sonic experiments somewhere between prog-, library-, electronic dance music and the french open.

Salsa (FR/ MMODEMM)

Salsa is the new project of Loup Gangloff & Frederic Mancini collaboration (synths and drums duet Deux Boules Vanille). Two DIY analog synthesizers and a drum machine to mess around acid house, gamelan or drunken indian ragas. Salsa, the magical alliance between sauce and dance.

Noctuidae’s blurred edges

Valerio Tricoli (Palermo, Italy, 1977) is a composer and performer of electro-acoustic music.

Since the mid ’00 his main instruments for live presentations is the Revox B77 reel-to-reel tape recorder, used as a completely analogue / ergonomic device for live sampling and real-time transformation / editing / mixing of pre-recorded (field or studio recordings) and made-on-the-spot sound sources, small acoustic and electronic instruments, objects and the amplified sound of the room itself in which the concert takes place. His electro-acoustic studio compositions are aligned to the tradition of Musique concrète and explore themes of the internal – represented both by the psychological and the physical – and of the occult, which together with the large use of spoken text makes them often deeply existential works, self-investigations of the psychological, emotional and irrational horror within.

Novoline is* alternatively-tuned polyphonic multi-rhythmic live-mixed live-generated parameter based unrendered unsequenced spontaneous improvised electronic music in real time via a software program on a 720kb floppy written in 1988 running on two Atari ST PCs using only era consistent hardware FM synthesis via MIDI.

Currently, the Novoline project is reflecting research in the fringe fields of electrical theory with relation to pythagorean tuning systems, which is highly enjoyable.

B/B/S  (Miasmah)

What happens when you take the founder of Miasmah records, Erik K Skodvin (aka Svarte Greiner and one half of Deaf Center), put him together with experimental drummer and electroacoustic musician Andrea Belfi and throw in a prolific drone metal avant-everything composer, Aidan Baker (also member of Nadja with Leah Buckareff)? Well, you get what is known as a ‘supergroup‘ in the underground circles (thinking here of Supersilent, Mortiz Von Oswald Trio and Black Elk), that’s what happens, and the result is beyond all expectations. Closer to the darker experimental and improvisational explorations of each individual artist’s output, the début collaboration under the B/B/S/ abbreviation is nothing but a marvel of sinister grandeur. Driven by an upbeat rhythm of Belfi’s abstract percussion, the deep distorted undertones of Baker’s versatile bass and the scratching growling of Skodvin’s bowed guitar, Brick Mask manages to capture the combined elements of post-everything doom-metal where each musician uniquely represents his own aesthetic in sound, while managing to seamlessly blend the output into one single stream of consciousness, as if these three have been at it for some time. This is yet another illegitimate mongrel of Berlin’s swarming and dense music scene, and one only wish for this ménage à trois to keep fertile for the many years to come! (Headphone Commute)
